Christmas Avalanche Destroys NY Ski Lodge

Avalanche at Belleayre Mountain in NY

Twas’ the morning of Christmas, but it wasn’t the sounds of reindeer hooves and sleigh bells making all the clatter. It was an avalanche. The holiday storm that hit much of the northeast Christmas eve and into Christmas day, dropped a whopping 6.5 inches of rain on Belleayre Mountain. The ski resort is located just a 2 hour drive from midtown Manhattan, in Highmount, NY in the Catskills.

The wind and rain sent supersaturated snow and debris from the Yahoo trail careening into the mid-mountain Overlook Lodge. Although, the lodge sustained significant damage, with windows and doors broken, it luckily was unoccupied at the time, and no one was reported injured.

Onward and upward!

Belleayre closed Christmas day and 12/26 to recover from the storm. But, the mountain operations team worked tirelessly to manage the situation and was able to reopen on Monday 12/27. They currently have skiing and riding on 8 trails serviced by 5 lifts as of today. With snowmaking ongoing and more storms on the way, hopefully there are brighter, smoother days ahead for Belleayre. They said it best themselves on their social media, “What a way to slide in to the new year!”
