She’s Back! – Mikaela Shiffrin Wins in Courchevel
Mikaela’s Giant Win in Giant Slalom
To be honest, it’s not fair to say she’s back. She never really left. But, for the first time in eleven months, Mikaela Shiffrin is back on top of the podium.
This was her 67th World Cup victory, tying her for third most all-time wins. But, this one felt different. This was her first victory since the sudden and untimely passing of her father, Jeff Shiffrin, last February. In an interview after the race, Shiffrin said, “It feels like the first win of my life. 67, that makes it seem like today is just another day in the journey, and it doesn’t feel like that.”
The Fire Still Burns
Taking to her social media after the victory, an understandably emotional Mikaela had this to say, “Cheers to the wonderful and kind people who said I lost my fire forever. This one’s for you. Also this one’s for every single person who is helping me get the fire back.”
Today’s win marked a step on the road back to ‘normal’ for Shiffrin, in a world that feels anything but normal. But hopefully, one more World Cup crystal globe can give her even a small bit of comfort. And for those competing against her, watch out. Sounds like she has turned any speculation or doubt into fuel on her quest for continued excellence and perfection on the slopes. Can’t wait to see it!
The best thing about sports is seeing the best in the world being the best at what they do. Basketball was better with Jordan winning rings. Golf was better with Tiger racking up green jackets. And skiing is better with Mikaela Shiffrin going fast, carving to precision, and standing on top of podiums with World Cup wins. Congratulations Mikaela!
